MARGAO

Come Thursday and the hustle and bustle in the commercial capital’s Gandhi market -- well known for congestion as well as for the fruits, vegetable and readymade garments -- will come to a halt, but for a different reason.

Unlike the past, when market vendors had shut all operations in the market for political and other reasons, this time the vendors have decided to close the market for a day on Thursday to attend the wedding of the son of Deputy Chief Minister, Manohar Babu Ajgaonkar, who heads the Gandhi market Vegetable and Readymade Garments Association as its president.

Ajgaonkar’s son wedding reception is scheduled at the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee indoor stadium on Thursday noon and the vegetable, fruit and readymade garments vendors have all decided to shut down the Gandhi market on Thursday to attend the wedding ceremony.

A visit to the Gandhi market on Tuesday revealed that a notice is put up on the tea stall operated by Rajendra Ajgaonkar, the brother of the deputy Chief Minister, stating that his shop will remain closed.

Local vegetable and fruit vendors informed the Gandhi market will remain closed for a day on Thursday as they all intend to attend the wedding reception of Ajgaonkar’s son at the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee indoor stadium.

A vendor remarked, “We have been extremely honoured and highly delighted to have received the invite for the wedding ceremony of our beloved leader and president of Gandhi Market Vendors’ Association Mr Babu Ajgaonkar’s son,” adding “in view of this, we the members of the association have unanimously decided to shut the shops on Thursday and grace the occasion.”

‌“It’s a very special occasion not only for the Ajgaonkar family but for all of us as we all have been treated like a family by Ajgaonkar. And to honour his invite, we all are going to attend the ceremony in large numbers,” the vendor added

The vendors have requested the customers and all those involved in the daily functioning of the Gandhi market to kindly take note of the same. “The functioning of the Gandhi market will be as usual from next day onwards,” the vendors added.

In the past, the vendors owing allegiance to the deputy Chief Minister over the years, had shut all operations, either to attend political meetings in support of Ajgaonkar or in support of leaders and political parities at the instance of the president of the Association. ALL IN THE FAMILY!
