MARGAO

Hosts Loyola High School, Margao, came from behind to defeat St Vincent’s High School, Pune 2-1 in Group A of Loyola Platinum Cup football tournament organised by Loyola High School at Don Bosco Oratory Ground, Fatorda.

The match started on a cagey note with chances at a minium during the intial period of the duel. St Vincent ‘s broke the deadlock in the 10th minute when Kevin Chatterjje slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a snapshot.

Stung by that setback, Loyola High School regrouped quickly and fired sorties and in the 15th minute, Rui Noronha’s well executed free-kick sailed over the crossbar much to the dismay of Loyola supporters. Earlier in the 11th minute man of the match Loyel Vaz ‘s snapshot crashed into the net.

Crossing over, Loyola High School looked well organised in defence following that they were looking to counter-attack and saw most of their attacks breakdown in the final third. Loyel Vaz struck the match-winner for his side to troop out worthy

winners.

With time running out, St Vincent’s went all out in serach of match winner but rival defenders stood tall in protecting their slender lead. Loyel Vaz of Loyola High School was adjudged match-winners. In Group B St. Stanislaus High School (Mumbai) and St. Britto High School-Mapusa match-up too proved to be an exciting one. St. Stanislaus made early intrusions in the St. Britto’s defence and had superior ball possession for most part of the match. A miscalculation in collecting the ball by the St. Stanislaus goalkeeper gave Devdutt Narvekar of St. Britto’s the opportunity to strike right in the 15th minute first half. In the second half, St. Stanislaus made renewed efforts to equalise but all their advances proved futile. In the 17th minute of the second half, Rahul Mendes struck a skillfull goal giving no chance for the St. Stanislaus goalkeeper to attempt a save. The man of the match was deservedly St. Britto’s goalkeeper Kester Fernandes whose composure in the goal saved his team the blushes. With this 2-0 win over their rivals, St.Britto’s kept their hopes of reaching the semis alive.

In an earlier match played between St. Paul’s High School (Belgaum) and Loyola High School (Pune), Ishaan Dhulgude of Loyola (Pune), scored a brace to give his team a comfortable 2-0 victory. He was declared the man of the match.
