The comunidades of Goa which own most of the land in the State has decided to back the Mhadei Bachao Movement in its fight against the state of Karnataka which seeks diversion of the Mhadei River.

“Although comunidades are non-political entity, in this crisis of environmental and ecological issues, we are supporting the Mhadei Bachao Movement for the benefit of the villages and State at large,” said Capt Venzy Viegas, President of Carambolim Comunidade.

He said commundade representatives will be present for Monday’s gathering at the Gomantak Maratha Samaj Hall at Panjim and requested all the components to join the meet at 3.30 pm.

“Mhadei being our mother feeds the rivers for all the villages in the State and thereby preserves the eco-biodiversity and eco-development of the State,” said Oldrin Pereira, President of Olaulim comunidade.

Viegas said the central government must consider all comunidades as owners of their respective villages in consideration with the Native Title Act of Australia which conferred this title on the Aborigines and indigenous people of those lands.
