Benaulim-based ethnographic museum Goa Chitra will receive a Brazilian award for their pioneering work in preserving art and culture in the State. The Instituto Felga Gracias Arte e Cultura award will be given to museum curator and founder Victor Hugo Gomes on November 29 and will be presented by renowned artist Felga De Moraes who is also the founder of the institute. The artist will also be presenting the museum with one of his works.

The annual awards presented by the institute this year focused on the Portuguese connections with Brazil and Goa narrowing down to selecting Goa Chitra Museum for their pioneering work and “reflecting the true spirit of the historical journey by preserving the ethnography of Goa and its people,” said Moraes in a letter to the museum.

Moraes who will travel to Goa from Brazil will himself present the award to Gomes at the museum and honour him with a special original sculpture made by the artist for his contribution for the betterment of society. FC Goa coach Zico will be the guest of honour and will be presented with an original sculpture too.

Describing the museum, Gomes said it is “based on age-old wisdom passed down through generations and is a tribute to my ancestors and their way of life. It represents decades of painstaking acquisition, restoration, documentation and research carried out single-handedly and houses a unique collection of traditional farming implements and other ancient tools of trade, set against the backdrop of a traditional organic farm.”

The artist Moraes has over the last fifty years journeyed through the world of art with segments like tapestry, watercolors, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, serigraphs and oils on canvas. “The focus is usually on themes of my passion which is fauna, flora, folklore and the typical Brazilian colours,” he said.
