Concern over the mental health of thousands of Goan seafarers is soaring among their family members back home in Goa after a Polish colleague jumped overboard the "Jewel of the Seas" cruise ship on the night of April 30.

Reports of the 26-year-old Polish sailor jumping overboard trickled back to Goa to families of seafarers who are also sailing on the same ship.

The Skipper of the ship ordered a 'Charlie drill' and cabin search but the Polish sailor, an electrician, was nowhere to be found, accordibg to a message relayed by a Goan seafarer to his family and friends here in Goa.

Goan seafarers said to number over 8,000, have been stranded on their ships anchored at ports across the globe. For weeks, leaders of the seafarer community in Goa have been engaging with the Goa government authorities to ensure their return but with little success.

So far, only 60 sailors from Discovery Marella cruise ship have returned to Goa after disembarking and completing sign-off formalities in Mumbai.
