Authorities have estimated that about 500 foreign tourists are still stranded at different beaches in Pernem taluka on account of the lockdown, as efforts are underway to send them back to their respective countries.

Pernem Deputy Collector Chandrakant Shetkar said these foreign tourists are located at Morjim, Arambol and Kerri-Tiracol, adding that some tourists have contacted their respective embassies in India.

“Food is being supplied to these tourists and we appealed to them to remain in their rented premises during the lockdown,” said Shetkar.

Shetkar also appealed to owners of rented room to continue providing accommodation to the stranded foreign tourists.

Some restaurants along the beaches have been directed to offer food to these tourists, while some social workers have also been providing food to the foreign tourists.

Meanwhile at a joint meeting between the tourism department, deputy collector and sarpanchas of coastal panchayats in Pernem taluka, it was informed that those tourists whose visas have expired would be sent back to their respective countries in a phased manner.

A group of 20 German tourists will fly to their country on Monday and permission will be given to transport these tourist to the Dabolim Airport.
