In perhaps a first, a two-wheeler rider was sentenced to a 30-day stay in prison for drunken driving around a week before last Christmas at Dona Paula by the court of Panaji’s Chief Judicial Magistrate.

The traffic cell said, the Assam native Abhijit Deka was initially hauled up for riding without helmet at Dona Paula on Wednesday.

It so turned out that the traffic policemen found out that he didn’t have a licence to ride a bike and was also in an inebriated condition.

Panaji’s Chief Judicial Magistrate to whom the matter was then referred for adjudication, held Deka guilty of violating sections 129, 3 and 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. In addition to a fine of Rs 2550, Deka was also sent to jail to serve a 30-day sentence of simple imprisonment.

Deka hails from Assam but is currently residing in Siolim.
