In a setback to senior cabinet minister Mauvin Godinho, the anticipatory bail application of his brother Wilson Godinho in the case of suicide of Merces panch and MGP leader Prakash Naik was on Thursday rejected by the District and Session Court (North Goa).
Godinho and another businessman, Tahir Irani, were booked for abatement to suicide after the duo’s names figured in a WhatsApp message that Naik had posted on his personal friends group minutes before his death.
Mauvin Godinho, a five time legislator and a senior member of the Pramod Sawant-led Cabinet has come under fire from the Opposition which has demanded his resignation in the interest of a free and fair investigation into Naik’s suicide
Old Goa police who booked the FIR against Wilson Godinho, meanwhile, gave no indication whether the arrest of the minister’s kin is imminent.
Prakash Naik alias Poka, was found dead from a gun shot at his residence at Voilem Bhat sending shocking waves among his supporters of St Cruz constituency where he had unsuccessfully contested the assembly elections in 2017.
Naik was found lying unconscious on the bed of his room when his sister, Sarita Govekar, along with her daughter had gone to look for him after he failed to turn up at the temple where the other family members were holding a puja.
The family had come down heavily on police investigation and demanded that the case be handed over to the Crime Branch. Prakash’s brother, Vinay, had said his brother had not committed suicide, but had been killed.
