Cuncolim Union came from behind to defeat Navelim Sporting Club 2-1 in an absorbing final to win the 2nd CRCC Cup 2019 inter-village football tournament, organised by Clube Recreativio E Cultural de Chinchinim.

In the title clash played at CRCC Ground, Chinchinim on Sunday, the teams played attacking soccer to keep the Sunday crowd on their toes. Navelim Sporting Club threatened the rival defence early with well-coordinated moves upfront. They eventually scored the first goal in the 28th minute when Jovin Da Costa slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot.

Stung by the setback, Cuncolim Union went back to the drawing board and returned with a rehashed plan of attack. The attacking moves flowed but their forwards muffed gilt-edged scoring chances. Among the misses, the most glaring was of Daulat Dessai, who failed to get the better of the rival goalkeeper in a one-on-one situation. At the other end, Navelim Sporting did have a few scoring chances but their forwards were wasteful.

Post the breather, Cuncolim Union upped the tempo to put Navelim -- who were fielding a depleted side -- under the pump. The equaliser duly arrived when Bevan D’Mello sent in a stiff shot, giving no chance to the goalie. Navelim, without the services of some of their first-choice players, looked ineffective in attack and their play was confined to midfield.

Cuncolim Union struck the match winner ten minutes before the long whistle when substitute Rosario Carvalho floated the ball inside the rival penalty box and striker Daulat Dessai atoned for his earlier miss, nodding home to loud cheers of the Cuncolim supporters, 2-1.

Cuncolim Union picked up a cash prize of Rs 40,000 beside the championship trophy, while Navelim Sporting Club had to settle for a prize of Rs 30,000 and a trophy.

Arnaldo Costa, vice-chairman of GFA Women’s Committee, was the chief  guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Fr Jose Antonio Da  Costa, Parish Priest of Our Lady of Good Hope, Chinchinim, Esemeraldo  Gomes, Mency Rodrigues, ZP Velim Constituency, and Prakash Dessai GFA  Executive member.
