MARGAO

A 32-year-old youth from the city here met a watery grave off Benaulim beach in the early hours of Monday. His body was later recovered by the lifeguards, but he was pronounced brought dead by the Hospicio authorities.

The deceased, Manish Shanke, along with his friend travelled to Benaulim after having tea at Fatorda in the wee hours of Monday. His friend claimed that the deceased insisted that they both go for a swim at Benaulim at around 6 am. While Shanke is believed to have gone for a swim, the friend claimed he was taking a nap in the car.

It was only when there was no sign of Shanke returning back to the car, his friend became worried and he took a walk along the Benaulim beach to find out his whereabouts. He claimed that he later alerted the lifeguards, who recovered the body off Benaulim beach.

The Colva police team led by PSI Gawas is investigating.

Meanwhile, Dhristi has said the body floating in the sea was retrieved at Benaulim beach at 9.30 am. The statement said the lifeguard on duty spotted a body floating about 100 mtrs out in the sea. He rushed into the waters with a rescue board while relaying a call for back-up. The body was retrieved and rushed to the hospital in the Drishti jeep even as the vital signs were missing.

“On enquiring further by the lifeguards it was informed that two boys from Margao came to the beach early in the morning at 6.30. While one went off for a walk, the other went to sleep in the car. When the boy awoke after 9 am, he realised his friend was still missing so he set out to look for him,” the statement added.
