The Bombay High Court at Goa has directed the Goa Tourism Department to make arrangements for the provision of mobile toilets in sufficient numbers at the NIO junction at Dona Paula within two weeks.

Hearing a petition filed by Melvin Francis D’Sa and eight others, the High Court by way of interim relief agreed that the area around the NIO circle needed the facilities due to the number of tourists visiting the Dona Paula jetty and vehicles parked at the junction.

The petition was filed by D’Sa and others who highlighted traffic congestion at the NIO circle. They stated that the area was earmarked for parking, but was not being used for the purpose and instead the government was planning to use it for setting up a restaurant and other facilities.

“According to the traffic police between 800 and 000 vehicles visit the area every day. The facilities are not adequate. The area was earlier opened for parking, but sometime last year the government decided to shut it which prompted this petition,” Adv Amey Kakodkar said.

“These arrangements must be made within a period of two weeks from today as we find a number of tourists visit the jetty and vehicles are found parked at the NIO junction. Some reasonable measure must be taken to provide toilet facility for all these tourists and other people who visit the jetty,” the High Court said.
