A 49-year-old patient diagnosed with kidney failure got a fresh lease of life earlier this month after undergoing a kidney transplant at Healthway Hospital in Old Goa. The patient was donated a kidney by the spouse in compliance with the Transplant of Human Organs Act, India.

A press release issued on Wednesday claimed that the kidney transplant surgery done at Healthway Hospital is the first of its kind to be done at a private hospital in Goa. The team of doctors supervising the patient at the hospital said that the patient was recovering well and will be discharged soon.

A team headed by the hospital’s first chief nephrologist Dr Shital Lengade was instrumental in conducting the transplant, which took around four and a half hours to complete. The press statement added that Dr Lengade has been treating nephrology-related cases since 2005 and has acquired transplant nephrologist training, including swap kidney transplant and blood group incompatible kidney transplant training from internationally reputed institutes.

The Healthway group of Hospitals received approval for kidney transplant after complying with the Transplant of Human Organ Act after undergoing the required formalities. All patients who wish to undergo kidney transplant also need to be approved by a State-appointed authorization committee.
