VASCO: A 40-year-old yellow-black taxi driver from Mangor-Vasco was seriously injured, after he was attacked by fellow taxi operators on Monday night.
According to Vasco police, the assault occurred at the Shantinagar highway, when Ebrahim Inamdar, a member of United Taximen Union (UTU), an association of around 350 yellow-black taxis, was allegedly attacked by a fellow 25-year-old yellow-black driver of Birla.
Vasco police said the accused had been seen along with seven other persons.
"The assault was brutal and Inamdar was shifted to GMC hospital for treatment. The accused and his associates attacked Inamdar after they followed his car which left Dabolim Airport with a passenger,” said a police source.
“The accused followed Inamdar's car and when they reached the Shantinagar highway, they overtook the car and blocked it and began assaulting Inamdar in front of the passenger. The passenger who witnessed the fight fled from the car to safety," the police source added.
Police believe that earlier in the day, Inamdar had told the accused to park his yellow-black taxi properly at the airport, which led to an argument and could have led to the assault.
Police said the accused fled from the location, while Inamdar is presently undergoing treatment at GMC hospital.
After recording the statement of Inamdar, Vasco police registered an offence under Sections 341, 325, 143, 147, 148, 506 (ii) read with 149 of IPC.
Police said the main accused in the case and his friends are absconding and Vasco police have begun efforts to nab them. Vasco PSI Atikesh Khedekar is investigating the matter under the supervision of PI Nilesh Rane.
