CANACONA

Traditional fishermen of Canacona finally got something to cheer about after they netted a prized catch of solar shrimps for the past three days.

According to sources, the traditional form of fishing with ‘paim-voddo’ paid rich dividends to the fishermen at Palolem, catching not only the mixed variety of fish but also were lucky to net a substantial quantity of prized solar shrimps.

Even the few motorized fishing boats which dared to venture into the sea returned with very good quantity of solar shrimps and other catch of baby sharks, pomfrets and a few more varieties of fish.

Incidentally, even as though the seas were rough for the past 2-3 days, a few motorized canoes reluctantly ventured into the rough seas not only from Palolem, but also from Agonda, Polem and Khola beach-coves, and returned with good catches.

On Friday, the solar shrimps rate was Rs.250/- a kilogram while on Saturday the same was sold for Rs.200  and later on for Rs 150.

Small mackerels, dhodyare (croaker), sharks (baby sharks and others), pomfrets, sardines, amongst other varieties were also netted.

The Paim-Voddo method, normally possible only at Palolem beach shore (during this time of the year) fetched large quantity.

However, the catch was mostly of mixed fishes (kormat), but also included good quantity of prized solar shrimps. The traditional fishermen who operate with the Paim-Voddo had a tough time to clear the nets and later on separate the fish and prawns.

4-5 pieces of pomfrets of smaller size was sold for Rs 500 while a sizeable pomfret was quoted at Rs 900 a kg.

Several people were seen lining up to witness the fish catch once after the motorized boats landed.
