The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Thursday appealed to people to offer segregated garbage to help MMC tackle waste, one of the most pressing issues in the port town.

MMC Chairperson Nandadeep Raut said he had received a letter from the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA) to take steps to tackle garbage issue in Vasco city.

Raut also said the MMC would soon enhance the capacity of BITS Pilani biogas wet waste treatment plant, set up at the Sada garbage treatment plant, from 5 to 30 tonnes of wet waste per day.

“People in Vasco must realise that garbage has become a major issue now and they must offer segregated garbage, because this is a major step to tackle the issue.”

“The biogas wet waste treatment plant installed by Bits Pilani on a trial basis at the Sada garbage treatment plant has a capacity to convert 5 tonnes of wet waste on a daily basis.”

“We have plans to enhance this capacity. We have also received a proposal and we have agreed upon it. We will inspect the plant and later enhance the capacity from 5 to 30 tonnes of wet waste per day.

“The budget for this enhancement is Rs 9 crore, of which 25% will be borne by the MMC and balance 75% will be funded by the central government,” said the MMC chairperson.

Former MMC chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar said the MMC should have immediately resolved to enhance the capacity of the BITS Pilani biogas wet waste treatment plant.

“We have had a council meeting to discuss and decide on the garbage issue. There was a discussion to upgrade and enhance the capacity of the BITS Pilani wet waste treatment plant. The MMC must not waste time in inspection and study, because huge heaps of garbage is piling up on a daily basis.”

“The MMC could have resolved to upgrade the plant today itself, instead of wasting precious time. When it comes to garbage, every passing day generates huge piles of garbage at the garbage treatment plant in Sada,” said Goankar.
