Mandrem MLA Dayanand Sopte on Monday expressed that the Goa government had done a lot to take forward the notion of “Goem, Goemkar and Goemkarponn”.

Elaborating on the government’s contributions, Sopte spoke about better road connectivity after the construction of the third Mandovi bridge.

“People were skeptical, asking why three bridges were needed for a small stretch. But even the skeptics have realised the importance of the third bridge,” Sopte said.

Sopte also commended the subsidies given by the government for mechanised farming saying that the cost of production and output ratio was good.

On the health front, Sopte said that the Health Department was offering a lot to the people like open-heart surgery, which was a dream in Goa, ambulance service, and hearse van service.

While seconding the motion, however, Sopte also highlighted numerous areas where the government needed to pull up its socks.

“There is a need for the government to set up gyms in every village so that youth can be fruitfully occupied, and don’t while away their time,” he said, adding that their health too would benefit.

He asked Sports Minister Babu Ajgaonkar to buck up on rural sports infrastructure. “Each village needs a sports ground, and if the sports grounds already exist, they need to be maintained,” he said.

Sopte also lamented the lack of jobs for youth. “People from outside come, set up factories here, throw our educated Goans out, and put their own people,” he said.

“The Directorate of Higher Education (DHE) has given me statistics that the number of Bed/DElEd grads each year is 600. Where are the government jobs?” he questioned, adding that it was the duty of the government to pay the educated unemployed if the government could not provide them jobs.

Sopte also highlighted the miserable toilet facilities for the poorest of the poor in many villages, pointing out that the government needed to identify who needed toilet facilities and provide them with the same at the earliest.
