Conceding it was a blunder on the part of the Congress to give the Panjim ticket to Babush Monserrate in the recent by-poll, All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Goa in-charge Dr A Chellakumar on Thursday called Monserrate the main culprit behind the merger of the 10 Congress MLAs into the BJP.

“Giving the Panjim ticket to Monserrate was the biggest blunder by the Congress. I cannot say who was behind the decision to give the ticket to Monserrate, but it was a collective decision. I don’t want to point accusing fingers at anyone,” Chellakumar told the media.

He recalled that two years ago, he had himself announced that Monserrate will never be admitted into the Congress, but hastened to add that the party had to finally admit him in the party and give him the Panjim ticket.

“Monserrate is the main culprit in the recent political upheaval. People who have got illegal money are taking the people of Goa for a ride. As a political party, if we are now giving the ticket on the winnability to form the government, the party will be blamed. We have to look into the winnability of candidates as the party is left with no option,” he said.

Making a fervent plea to the people of Goa to reject defectors, Chellakumar said, “People make a mistake by electing defectors. The day people start rejecting the defectors, automatically Goa’s development will take place. Development of Goa will not take place through defections.”
