300 cases of trees falling reported in last 11 days

The heavy spell of rain during the past week played havoc in the State. In the last 11 days, the State witnessed around 300-odd tree or branches falling.   

Crores of property which include electric wires, poles, and houses have been damaged due to uprooting of trees. On Thursday, 90-odd cases of trees and branches falling were reported to the fire department and even after that the department was busy receiving such calls, an official from the Fire Department told “The Goan.”   

The number of trees falling increased day by day in the last 11 days. On July 1, there were 15 cases of trees falling, July 2 saw 12 such cases. The other days witnessed incidents as follows: July 3 (7 cases), July 4 (16 cases), July 5 (25 cases), July 6 (39 cases), July 7 (30 cases), July 9 (43 cases) and July 10 (around 50 cases).   

Around 10 vehicles have been damaged due to falling of trees.   

The frequency of emergency calls was such that the fire fighters claim they had to run from pillar to post to set the situation right.   

In Panaji itself there were around 10 calls that reported trees falling. At Cacara, a tree fell on a house causing a loss of around Rs 1.5 lakh.   

On Wednesday, a tree which fell near Hotel Manvin, Panaji, damaged three vehicles. Major cases of 

tree falling were recorded in Valpoi.
