Urging Deputy Chief Minister Vijai Sardesai to stop fooling the people on the Sonsodo mess, Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco on Monday warned that the people of Curtorim have only two options, either to stop the trucks heading to the Sonsodo plant with mixed waste or knock the doors of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) from dumping unsegregated waste on the Sonsodo dump.

While saying that he would seek an appointment with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to brief him over the mess at Sonsodo, Reginaldo demanded that the High Powered Coordination Committee (HPCC) headed by the Chief Minister to immediately seal the Sonsodo dump and stop the Margao Municipal Council from dumping mixed waste on the existing dump yard.

“There’s no will on the part of the authorities to solve the Sonsodo imbroglio. I cannot sit idle and see how open dumping of mixed waste poses a health hazard and a nuisance to the residents of my Curtorim constituency,” he said, after inspecting the Sonsodo site in the morning. He and Dr Joe D’Souza later called on the Margao Municipal Chief Officer, Sidhivinayak Naik to complain that the promise to supply segregated waste to the Sonsodo treatment plant has come a cropper.

Saying that segregated waste from the city is not going to the treatment plant, Reginaldo told the Deputy Chief Minister to stop egoistic politics and understand the ground reality. “Vijai says the garbage will be cleared in four days. But, Municipal trucks laden with tons of unsegregated waste came to Sonsodo. This only goes to show that the civic body has failed on the waste segregation exercise,” he said, adding that he would discuss with his people before taking a call on the future course of action.
