Margao Municipal Council struggled on Monday to supply segregated waste to the Sonsodo waste treatment plant, as Fomento sent back around five trucks laden with mixed waste in the morning.

But the silver lining for the civic body was that it managed to hand over around 14 tonnes of segregated waste to the plant by Monday evening, indicating that the civic body has made a small, but good beginning on the waste segregation front. Given that the MMC collects on an average around 60 tonnes of waste generated in the city every day, MMC officials said that the civic body has managed to supply around 25 per cent of segregated waste to the Sonsodo plant.

Fomento officials confirmed that around 14 tonnes of segregated waste was received at the waste treatment plant till 6 pm on Monday. MMC officials pointed out that the tonnage may further go up by late evening as trucks loaded with hotel waste were expected to head to the plant.

Sources in the know pointed out that the 14 tonnes of segregated waste had mainly come from the Fatorda area of the city, where it has outsourced a local contractor to collect waste door-to-door.

MMC Engineer, Agostinho Mesquita told The Goan that the civic body has now set a target to supply 20-odd tonnes of segregated waste to the treatment plant on Tuesday. He said while the contractor engaged by the civic body to collect waste from the 11 wards of Fatorda had helped to supply the segregated waste, the situation turned out different in the Margao area of the city.

Given that many households had failed to supply segregated waste to the municipal workers, it has now been decided not to accept mixed waste from the households. “Today, our workers stopped taking mixed waste from many a household in Margao,” he said, while saying that the civic body has sent a message loud and clear to either cooperate with the civic body or the body will not accept mixed waste.

Fomento officials, on the other hand, said the five trucks which were sent back from Sonsodo in the morning were all laden with mixed waste. “We had made it clear to the MMC that only segregated waste will be accepted at the plant. Accordingly, the doors of the plant were opened only for the trucks bringing segregated waste,” informed Fomento official Sudin Pai Raiturkar, adding that the MMC managed to supply around 14 tons of segregated waste by Monday evening.
