Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha has admitted that the BJP had performed below expectations in her constituency and attributed this situation to public anger against the BJP over a controversial project in one village.

She was commenting on factors which led to BJP’s dismal performance in Cortalim constituency at the recent South Goa Lok Sabha polls. Incidentally, Cortalim was the only one among four constituencies in Mormugao taluka to have given a lead to the rival Congress party.

The three other constituencies of Vasco, Mormugao and Dabolim had each given the BJP a lead of over 3,000 votes, causing anger among BJP leaders like Panchayats Minister and Dabolim MLA Mauvin Godinho, who was also South Goa’s BJP campaign manager, as he blamed Cortalim constituency for BJP’s failure in the South Goa Lok Sabha polls.

“We fell short of our expected votes in Cortalim constituency as we secured very less votes in Quelossim due to the controversial Mini India Park Project which, the villagers fear, is being revived while they are opposing the ecologically destructive project,” said Saldanha.

The MLA insisted that despite all their efforts, the BJP could not do better in Cortalim constituency.

“Everyone works hoping for victory. Unfortunately, in spite of all efforts, the fate lies in the hands of the voters, which is sometimes beyond the efforts of campaign managers, the MLAs and the Karyakarte,” said Saldanha.

“A mature person like the BJP South Goa campaign manager should know this better, having been in politics for over two decades,” said Saldanha, while responding to Godinho’s strong remarks against her constituency.
