The missing girl who is in the centre of an alleged high-profile rape case involving former minister Atanasio (Babush) Monserrate was on Monday traced in Mapusa and was later taken to the Verna police station.

According to sources, SP Arvind Gawas and Mormugao DySP Sunita Sawant were present at Verna police station while the girl was being counselled by a NGO present at the police station.

Mormugao DySP Sunita Sawant speaking to reporters confirmed that the missing girl was finally traced. “After the girl went missing, our investigation was going on in all directions and finally we traced the girl today evening and she is safe and fine,” said Sawant.

DySP Sunita however maintained that further information about the girl could not be provided at this juncture.

Highly placed sources disclosed that the LIB staff of the police was instrumental in tracing the victim girl in a flat in Mapusa.

“The girl was traced in a rented 2 BHK flat in Canca in Mapusa at around 5.30 pm on Monday evening. She was staying in this flat arranged by one of her friend for the past 15 days,” disclosed the source.

It is learnt that the LIB staff was instrumental in tracing the victim and putting together all the bits and pieces of

information sourced in the last eight days.

Sources also disclosed that the girl apparently had rifts with the staff and warden at the rehabilitation centre and could be the likely reason for her running away.

It may be recalled that the girl had gone missing since April 28 from a rehabilitation centre in South Goa and a formal complaint in this regard was later filed at Verna police station and an offence under section 365 of IPC on charges of abduction was registered.
