AA de Moira played their hearts out to register a solitary goal win over Salgaocar Juniors in a Geno-GFA First Division League match played at Duler stadium, here

on Sunday.

The match started almost on an equal footing but in the 12th minute, the Salgaocar colts received a jolt when referee gave marching orders to their skipper Robert Noronha for handling the ball inside the penalty box and awarded Moira a spot kick. Moira’s Llyod Mascarenhas stepped forward and scored, 1-0.

Salgaocar’s Fhazer Gomes, who came from the bench, could have levelled terms in the 19th minute but his long ranger missed the target narrowly. Another glorious chance went begging for Salgaocar as Valentino Nazareth sent a through pass to Fhezer but the latter failed to beat Moira keeper in a one-on-one situation before the break.

On resumption of play, Salgaocar’s Valentino sent a through pass to an overlapping Prajot but he failed to get past the keeper. In the last half hour, Moira time and again attacked the rival citadel but failed to increase the lead.

In the 60th minute, Llyod and Dattaraj Gaonkar made a fine combined move and found Savio inside the penalty box, but the latter’s strike deflected off a rival defender for a corner. Six minutes later, a 40-yard strike by Savio sailed inches over the bar.

Another chance was squandered by Moira when a half volley by Savio hit Salgaocar keeper’s body and the ball rolled to Llyod but his tap from close hit the crossbar and went out. Just two minutes before the final whistle, substitute Kaplesh saw his first touch go past the Salgaocar goal. Noel D’Silva of Moira received the Man of the match award.
