In a setback to citizens in Mormugao agitating for shutting down coal handling operations at the port, the Goa State Pollution Control Board on Thursday discharged the show cause notices it had issued to the Jindal and Adani firms operating there.
GSPCB chairman Ganesh Shetgaonkar chaired the meeting where representatives of the two coal-handling companies -- Jindal-owned M/s South West Port Limited (SWPL) and Adani Ports -- who operate at the port were also heard.
GSPCB member-secretary Dr Sharmila Monteiro said, notices were discharged and the two companies will be allowed to continue operations on condition that financial penalty guidelines set by the Board based on principle of ‘polluter pays’ are fulfilled.
Dr Monteiro said, Board also took into account the report of IIT-Mumbai and that wind speeds had dropped, before their decision.
According to Thursday’s decision, the two companies will also have to install CCTV cameras at their operation sites for recording real time footage of the pollution control measures installed.
