As part of the ongoing exhibition Souza in the 40s, Sunaparanta invites you to a talk by Jugneeta Sudan - ‘Rethinking Representation: The Female Nude in FN Souza’s Early Art’ on Tuesday, February 26, 6.30 pm, at Sunaparanta amphitheatre, Near Army House, Altinho, Panaji - Goa

Souza’s portraiture calls attention to ideas of representation at a time when it is a burning topic of contention around the world. Souza’s early figurative art keenly opens up an alternative perspective, inviting viewers to see human bodies from a new angle, and as a result altering the perceptions of a society.

In Souza’s figurative art (1940-49), the female is constructed and managed internally, no longer exposed and vulnerable, but assertive and powerful. Jugneeta Sudan is an academic, an art & literary critic and poet based in Goa. In her journey with literary criticism, critic as an artist, her writing births new perspectives of existing ways of seeing. She has presented her critical views on the international artist FN Souza at Fundacao Oriente, The Story of Space Festival and Serendipity Arts Festival. Her writings have appeared in Art India and various other publications.

Souza in the 40s documents the beginnings of the artist’s career as well as those of the Modernist movement in India.  The artist’s move to London in 1949 is the end point of the show, which features only works produced in India.
