The Murda-Grande locality of Nuvem village witnessed an uproar as alert residents nabbed women allegedly involved in targetting closed houses to commit burglaries.

Around five women and a minor boy were caught by the villagers as they made an attempt to burgle a house. Inquiries by the locals later revealed that the gang of women was also involved in committing burglaries in 3-4 other closed houses in the locality.

While one of the woman is believed to have escaped from the area, the local residents nabbed the remaining five women before calling the Maina-Curtorim police to take their custody and investigate into the spate of theft reported in Nuvem in recent times.

A woman Natty Gomes told The Goan that her house was burgled by the accused after entering inside through the window. “They have lifted away all the household items from the house and did not even spare the Altar and the images, besides utensils and other goods,” she said.

The incident came to light when a local resident Camilo Gomes noticed some sound in the closed house of his neighbour, only to find these women engaged in the act of stealing the household items.

Maina-Curtorim PSI Veronica told The Goan that all the five women have been arrested for theft since they were involved in lifting away household items worth around Rs 10,000.

To a question, she said four of the five women were residents of Khareband, and were all natives of Karnataka. She said the police are investigating to ascertain the role of these women in similar burglaries that had taken place in Nuvem in recent times.
