Residents of Mayem last week approached Mayem MLA Pravin Zantye requesting him to start garbage collection in the village at the earliest. One of the residents, Vishant Nagvekar told ‘The Goan’ that door-to-door garbage collection has never been undertaken in the village, and that residents asked Zantye to start the same under the “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” mission.

Besides this, residents highlighted the bad state of roads in the village, as well as the fact that the roads are very narrow. Nagvekar along with Sushant Shirodkar a social worker, has asked that roads be widened besides being repaired.

Amongst other problems faced by Mayem residents are a lack of continuous water and power supply. Residents explained to Zantye the need for continuous power supply on weekends, which they say has been a persistent problem for over 30 years. Further, residents get water supply for only a few hours a day.

Krishna Parab, Panch Member of Gaonkarwada Mayem present at the meeting also highlighted the need for water pipelines as old as 25 years to be replaced.

As construction of the village panchayat has already been started, Nagvekar has asked that provisions for accessibility to the building be made. “The old panchayat building was not accessible to elderly citizens and the persons with disabilities,” Nagvekar told ‘The Goan’.

According to Nagvekar, the MLA promised to take up all the issues that were brought to his notice. Both Zantye and Parab told Nagvekar that they will try and start door-to-door garbage collection on priority basis.

“The MLA assured us that the roads would be repaired and broadening would start immediately after completion of the Tikhazan – Chodan Road,” he said.

The MLA has also promised them to contact the electricity and power departments over basic amenities for residents, and to make provisions for accessibility at new panchayat building at Mayem.
