Cracking down on poaching of wild animals in Sattari taluka, Valpoi forest officials arrested two poachers and seized a gun and other materials in the wee hours of Thursday.  

According to reports, wild animal poaching had been on the rise in the last few days and patrolling was intensified on Wednesday evening to crackdown on the illegal hunting of wild animals.   

Patrolling began from Sonal village and proceeded to Sawarde and Shirsoda in Sattari Taluka. At about 1.30 am, a forest patrolling team led by Range Forest Officer Deepak Tandel noticed some persons involved in poaching activity.   

Two accused, Dileep Gaonkar of Shirsoda and Ramachandra Gaonkar of Shelpe were arrested by the forest team. A gun along and other poaching material were seized from the accused.   

The forest patrolling team led by Tandel consisted of Round Forester Ashok Gokhale, Forest Guard Sidhant Sawant, Forest Guard Priyesh Rekdo and Guard and Driver Suresh Kumar.  

Speaking to reporters, Assistant Conservator of Forest Anand Jadhav said patrolling had been undertaken in the area to crackdown on illegal activities in the forest area.  

“Two poachers were arrested for their involvement in the hunting of wild animals. They have been arrested under the Madei Wildlife Protection Act and were remanded to one-day custody by the Valpoi court,” said Jadhav, while adding that patrolling would continue in the area.  

The accused were released on bail on Friday.
