Goa to host matches of women’s 50-over tourney

Elite Group C fixtures at three venues from today

Goa will host Elite Group C matches of BCCI U-19 Women’s One Day tournament, Goa Cricket Association announced on Saturday.  

“GCA is for the first time hosting Elite Group C matches of the BCCI U-19 fifty-over cricket tournament to be played between eight States in Goa. The winners and runners-up of the group will qualify for the next round,” stated Veena Phadte, chairperson of the organising committee, during a press conference where the Goa squad for the tournament was announced. 

Hosts Goa are grouped with Tamil Nadu, Vidharbha, Gujarat, Odisha,  Tripura, Saurashtra and Jammu and Kashmir. The tournament begins on  February 10 and concludes on February 26 and will be held simultaneously  at the GCA Academy ground in Porvorim, GCA ground in Sanguem and  the Margao Cricket Club (MCC) ground in Margao.  

Tejeswini Duragad has been named captain of the Goa team and Shindiya Naik is her deputy. The Goa team is: Tejeshwini Duragad, Shindiya Naik, Purvaja Verlekar,Diksha Amonkar, Divya Naik, Tanaya Naik, Poorva Bhaidkar, Diksha Gaude, Sejal Satardekar, Rehna Kamat,Gayatri Talwar, Ibtisam Shaikh, Savali Kolambkar,Urvashi Govekar and Taniya Pawar.  

GCA executive committee member Manohar Naik has been appointed in-charge of the Sanguem venue, Sayed Abdul Majid is in-charge at Margao, Mohan Chodankar is in-charge at Porvorim, while Yatin Kamurlikar has been appointed the tournament co-ordinator by the GCA.  

“The tournament will go a long way in encouraging girls in Goa to come out and play cricket in more numbers. I know the tournament is clashing with exams but I call on all girls, who can make it, to come and support Goa and watch the girls from other teams in action,” Phadte said.
