From new agencies to advertisers and other small business, and even the general populace, everyone agrees that the Internet, and within that, social media is the next big phenomenon. That is where we increasingly spend our time, and that is the place to reach maximum audience quickly and effectively.

“Social media provides an opportunity for businesses to connect with their customers, both current and potential. However, advertising on social media does not work the way conventional advertising for say print works,” says Faizan Ansari, digital marketing consultant, and speaker at the upcoming Social Media Marketing Masterclass, which is set to be held at 91Sprinbooard in Panaji this week.

“Small and medium business could benefit more from social media, because firstly, the budget for advertising on social media is less-you could start from just Rs500. Secondly, with social media, you could target a specific set of audience by applying filters such as location, age-group, gender etc. So, your advertisement reaches the audience you want. This gives you a better RoI,” explains Faizan. The workshop is designed especially for small and medium businesses and startups as well as personal brands, he adds.

That said, the key objective of the workshop is to illustrate with examples how social media marketing works, informs the marketing strategist. “This is different from conventional marketing and advertising. You cannot just post a billboard ad on Facebook and hope to get likes and customers. According to reports, netizens see more than 5000 marketing messages every day, and they have learnt to ignore things that do not deliver value to their lives,” Faizan elaborates and further adds, “Businesses need to understand that this is ‘social media’. i.e. it is social first, and media later. You need to connect with your audience, and for a genuine connection to be forged, you need to add value to the customer’s life. The workshops will look at how businesses can do exactly that. We are trying to tell the businesses that there is no need to clutter the timeline of the users. The key is to interact and engage with the audience, and deliver value”

“It is also important for businesses to understand their audience, understand their needs, and  try to solve their problems. For this you will have to build intelligent content and strategy. When marketing on social media, you have to think about selling the product in the long run,” Faizan states, underlining that India is going to reach 400 million Internet users by 2020, which will present a huge opportunity for businesses in these sphere.
