The much talked of Sagarmala programme got a concrete shape in Goa with the Captain of Ports issuing a notification extending the Central Shipping Ministry’s financial assistance scheme. Private projects are also eligible for funding under Sagarmala.

The notification issued on Friday last by Captain James Braganza was published in the official gazette and has come into force on Thursday.

Ignoring stiff opposition from civil society and local communities, the State government seems keen to give the Centre’s push for promoting waterways the green signal.

Mormugao port, which is Goa’s sole major port, its sole minor port off Panaji and future private port proposals along the coast and on islands will be eligible for funding from the Centre for infrastructure projects.

Braganza said in the notification that construction or upgradation of exclusive berths for coastal cargo, berths/jetties for passenger ferries in major and non-major ports will be provided funding through the Scheme.

Construction of platform/jetties for hovercrafts/seaplanes by major and non-major ports or State governments in port waters and construction of berths/jetties in national waterways and on islands by the State government
