Goa added three more medals to their tally on Day 2 of the 2nd Khelo India Youth Games underway at Balewadi Sports complex in Pune.

Yash Padloskar, Xavier D’Souza and Shoan Ganguly won silver medals on Friday to take the State’s tally to four medals, adding to the lone bronze that was won on Thursday by Xavier. Shooter Yash, who could not participate in the opening edition of Khelo India last year as it was an exclusively U-17 event, was very close to winning gold medal in under-21 10m air rifle shooting. He finished with 247.6 points behind gold-medallist Dhanush Srikant of Telangana, with 248.9 points.

Ace swimmer Xavier, who was Goa’s top performer last year with one gold three silver and one bronze medal to his name, came up with his second medal finishing second (0:58:08) in 100m backstroke (U-21). Xavier had clinched a bronze in 200m freestyle on Thursday. Goa’s third silver medal on the day came through swimmer Shoan Ganguly (04:51:65) in 400m IM U-17 category.

Meanwhile in football, Goa opened their campaign with a 1-0 win over Manipur. Veegan Ferrao scored the lone goal from the penalty spot.

Goa enjoyed good ball possession in the opening minutes of the game and attacked only on counters in the first quarter. Manipur had their chances but they couldn’t get past goalkeeper Ozen Silva, who brought off smart saves to keep Goa in the game.

While Goa used their pace upfront, Manipur defence found it difficult to hold Goa, despite not being at their best in the attacking third. Goa were rewarded with a penalty when Joel Dias was brought down in the box by a Manipur defender. Veegan stepped over and coolly converted from the spot. Crossing over, Goa chose to stay back and defend the slender lead. Manipur were all out and attacked in numbers from the centre, but despite their constant inroads, they failed to break the strong Goa defence and Ozen in goal.
