Loyola win 5th Baptist Memorial football title

Holders Loyola High School, Margao beat Marina English High School, Verna 1-0 to win the 5th edition of the Baptist Fernandes (Ex Dempo SC, State and national footballer, and SAG coach) Memorial Inter School (Under-12) football tournament organised by Goa Soccer Centre at the Panchayat ground, Chicalim   

Loyola scored the solitary goal through a corner kick in the first half. Marina dominated the match in the first half but their strikers were off-colour. It was a ding dong battle towards the end but stout defending by Loyola’s Joyden Rodrigues held the Marina stars Slayton and Jodrich at bay.   

Earlier in a girls’ exhibition football match, Regina Mundi School, Chicalim beat Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School, Cortalim 4-3 via the tiebreaker after the teams were locked goalless at full time.   

Loyola lads received a cash prize of Rs 10,000 offered by Cedric Dias in memory of his late mother Maria Leonora Dias, the winner’s trophy and medals at the hands of Redento D’Souza, former deputy director of Sports & Youth Affairs. Jovito Lopes, Administrator of Goa Football Association, distributed the prizes to the runners-up.   

The following prizes were awarded: Best Goalkeeper - Aston Barboza (Loyola HS Margao), Best Defender - Slayton Pinho (Marina English HS, Verna), Best Midfielder - Sam Maura (Bethany Convent School, Sao Jose de Areal), Best Striker - Jayden Rodrigues (Loyola HS, Margao), Highest Scorer - Sohan Fernandes (Loyola HS, Margao), Best Player of the Tournament - Kifern Dias (Fr Agnel Multipurpose School, Verna).   

Former footballers, organisers and administrators -- Eustaquio Pereria, Felix Afonso, Redento D Souza, Gokuldas Nagvenkar, Anthony D’Costa, Suhas Goancar, Manuel D’Mello, Francis D’Souza (Pinto), Valente Fernandes, Bento Andrew, Jovito Lopes, Umesh Dicholkar, Stanley Colaco, Orson Rodrigues, Rajkapoor Lotlikar, Anthony Lobo, Andrew Cruz Fernandes, Shailesh Narvekar, R V Kumbhar, Arvinder Singh, Paresh Naik, Sharon Fernandes and Joanita Fernandes were felicitated after the finals for their contribution to football in Goa.   

M M Mutawalli, former State football coach and organising secretary, welcomed the gathering. Francisco Nunes, President of GSC & GFA member, proposed the vote of thanks, while Umer Mutawalli compered the function.
