The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) will undertake a fresh assessment to ascertain the number of scrapyards in the municipality.

MMC Chief Officer Angelo Fernandes has already issued directives to all municipal inspectors to conduct a survey to find out how many illegal scrapyards are running in the port town and also submit a compliance report.

“As per the records, this council had conducted a survey and found there were 17 scrapyards within the jurisdiction of this council. Orders were also issued to them on March 6, 2009 to remove their scrapyards within seven days.”

“However, it is brought to my notice that more illegal scrapyards have surfaced and are undertaking activities without obtaining any licence,” said Fernandes.

He added that some scrapyards had earlier obtained a licence which were not renewed from 1998, as there were High Court directions to shift them outside the residential jurisdiction of this council.

“I have directed all assistant municipal inspectors to conduct a fresh survey of all scrapyards in the municipality and to submit the compliance report within a period of seven days. This report is required to file a report before the appropriate authority. We will soon take necessary action in this regards,” said Fernandes.
