Housing Minister and Saligao MLA Jayesh Salgaonkar has said the Nerul church, which has completed 450 years of its existence, will soon be beautified and illuminated by the State government through the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation.

He was speaking at Reis Magos after illuminating the Reis Magos church in the presence of Parish Priest Fr Orlando Marques, Reis Magos Sarpanch Virendra Shirodkar, Dy Sarpanch Siya Nagvekar, panch members and locals.

Salgaonkar further mentioned that the room and additional toilets will be constructed at Nerul church and the surroundings will be beautified.

The Reis Magos church has been beautified and illuminated by GSIDC at a cost of Rs 73 lakh. This is the oldest church in Bardez and has been declared as a heritage site by the State government.

“In fact, the beautification work of Reis Magos church was tendered two years ago but the Bishop’s House did not permit it as it wanted to keep the church for prayers only. But I managed to persuade the authorities at the Bishop’s House and got permission to beautify it,” said Salgaonkar.

Parish Priest Fr Marques said, “Salgaonkar deserves compliments for taking the initiative to beautify and illuminate this church after seeking consent from the Bishop’s House.” Sarpanch Virendra Shirodkar and Dy Sarpanch Siya Nagvekar also spoke at the function.
