Water Resources Department Minister Vinoda Paliencar on Tuesday emphasised the need to preserve and protect the water bodies and springs for the future generations and to meet the water requirements of the people.
He was addressing a gathering of people at Majorda village after laying the foundation stone for the desilting and beautification of the Tolleabandh lake at Calata area of the village in the presence of Nuvem MLA Wilfred D’Sa, Zilla Member Nelly Rodrigues, Majorda Sarpanch Agnelo Fernandes and others.
“Preserving our water resources is the need of the hour. Our water bodies and springs are our heritage. We should preserve them for the posterity,” he said, while promising full support to desilt and beautify the lakes and water bodies in Nuvem to make it a model constituency. Once desilted and beautified, the Tolleabandh lake can be used to hold sporting events, he added.
In his address, Nuvem MLA Wilfred D’Sa said the desilting and beautification of the Tolleabandh lake at Calata-Majorda was a long pending demand of the villagers. “The St Rock Club has been conducting water polo in this lake on Independence Day since the last 35 years. The lake has been craving for attention with the water body hit by weeds. A need was also felt for a retaining wall,” Wilfred said, while promising to complete the work before the next Independence Day in 2019.
The Nuvem MLA pointing out that the Tolleabandh work will cost the exchequer Rs 54 lakh, said the retaining wall project at a water body at Rassaim at Loutolim is estimated to cost around Rs 82.83 lakh.
In his address, Majorda Sarpanch Agnelo Fernandes thanked the WRD Minister as well as the Nuvem MLA for taking up the beautification work on the Tolleabandh lake. “Desilting and beautification of the Tolleabandh lake was a long pending demand of the villagers. I am thankful for both the WRD Minister as well as the Nuvem MLA for taking up the project,” he added.
