St Anthony’s Sports Club, Assolda overcame Fr Agnel Youth Sports Club, Paroda 1-0 to march into the semifinals of Mandopa Cup inter village football tournament organised by Mandopa Sporting Club at Mandopa ground, on Thursday.
Fr Agnel Youth came close to breaking the deadlock when Sezvin Fernandes’ rasping shot was parried away by rival goalkeeper.
St Anthony’s struck the match winner in the 5th minute when Mario Fernandes slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot. Spurred by the success, St Anthony’s intensified their attacks and nearly doubled the lead in the 16th minute when Christo Fernandes’ rasping shot hit the side netting.
Post resumption, St Anthony’s upped the ante and nearly increased their score but Manesh Olveira’s scorcher kissed the crossbar in the 49th minute. With the time running out, Fr Agnel pressed hard for the equliser and went all out but the rival defenders did well to protect their slender lead.
St Anthony’s Sports Club, Assolda will meet the winners of the match between Ambelim SC and Parish Youth Nuvem, in the semifinals on December 16.
