New girl’s wing of hostel, rainwater harvesting at GU

A new women’s wing of the Goa University Women’s hostel was inaugurated by Goa Governor and Chancellor of Goa University Dr Mridula Sinha on Thursday. The new wing will be able to lodge 32 women students, Vice-Chancellor Professor Varun Sahni informed media persons at the inaugural.   

Sahni also said that the new wing would serve as a blessing for students who came from the remote areas of Goa, as staying at the University campus would save them the hassle of commuting to and fro daily.   

Meanwhile, the governor also inaugurated the rainwater harvesting project in front of the Science Block at the University. The project, sponsored by Nestle, will aim to provide students of the University with water during the months of April and May, when the University faces water shortage, Sanjay Khajuria, the senior Vice-President (Corporate Affairs) of Nestle India said.   

Khajuria also explained how the water would be collected, and later purified. With the rain water harvesting project, around 7,87,500 liters of water per year will be collected, considering three months of moderate rainfall. With an average of 2,62,500 liters collected at the end of each month of rain, the same amount of water is set 

to be recharged.
