Housewife: A tiatr with clean entertainment

Tiatr Mogi

Today the whole world craves and yearns for peace and for a nine to six office goer, peace of mind is all that he dreams to attain. What is then the most important factor that contributes to the attainment of peace in the family that ultimately results in each family member relishing peace of mind?

Watch Housewife the latest release of Sir Domnic Coelho, alias Comedian Domnic, well remembered in tiatr circles as ‘Hod’do Bhakru’, and you will surely be taken for a jolly good ride of entertainment.

Script: ‘The script has a high literary value’ exclaimed a tiatrist from another tiatr troupe; a rare exclamation from a tiatrist’s mouth rather. True. But then the script was not in the true tiatr style! It was in the non-stop drama style. The main story plot had one story line and the comedy another. An attempt was made to connect the two but the attempt fell flat as the comedy in no way supported the main story line of the plot

But due credit should be given to the writer for writing a script that indeed has a literary value; which is unseen or unheard in commercial tiatr. The creation of characters in the plot was stupendous.

Comedy: When one realizes that the comedy will be shouldered by tiatr’s leading comedian brothers Domnic and Luis, the expectations are naturally high and both brothers did not dishearten the audience even for a second. While Domnic’s spring like movements reminiscent of tiatr’s greatest comedian Anthony Mendes, was enough to draw a smile Luis Bachan’s mannerisms and style were rib tickling. They are well supported in the act by two young girls, Avilla and Cassy. If trained well under these masters they are surely talents to watch and adore in future.

The comedy is clean and decent. No double meaning or vulgar innuendos. Parents can surely watch and enjoy this tiatr with their children of any age.

Sets : The sets are a failure. The background colour was faded and in no way resembled the house of a businessman who kept lakhs of rupees in his house. Moreover there was a wedding in the family and a Goan wedding house is surely decked. But the house had furniture in it which is a welcome sign on tiatr stage as no tiatr director pays attention to the house furniture. So the director makes up for the bad sets.

Acting : The tiatr script has created great characters and if the artistes could not live the characters on stage, it will be the ineffectiveness of the actor. But the entire team put in a splendid performance. Eleuterio D’Costa as the commanding arrogant patriarchal head of the family was simply unstoppable. His modulated dialogue delivery, actions and reactions were simply superb.

Michael de Chandor and Elias de Ponda excelled as the sons. Pricilla de Maina and the young Sonali were great as the daughters in law. Baby Laneesha de Maina walks in her parents footsteps. She steals the show. Pricilla definitely has a great competitor in acting in her very own house. Rons has a small cameo to play but he does it with such perfection that this will stand out to be his best role enacted on stage. Seriton’s character seemed extras in the script but well played.

Music/songs: All songs were entertaining. There are duo’s trio’s quartet and even a septuet! The new young girls are great in their rendition but they should stop imitating other singers, believe in themselves and go forth singing in their own style. The opening by Elias and Jelishka gives the tiatr a great start.

There are meaningful solos with original melodies too. Jelishka and Avilla have a voice to die for. Rons Tavares has given up political singing, and dishes out a powerful solo on Extra-ordinary Ministers of the church. However Rons faltered in his composing, as the melody had a double rhyme which was blatantly ignored. Elias de Ponda was superb in his rendition. His modulated voice and rich expressions in rhythm took his song to the next level. The group songs were very entertaining.

Direction: Comedian Domnic has paid good attention to all aspects of the tiatr production. The band was soft and pleasant to the ears of even those in the first rows.

The background music was great. The lights were nicely coordinated and focused. All characters portrayed their roles with discipline and conviction. Well done. Tiatr needs more of you!
