After the Lester D’Souza case, which brought the Goa Police under the scanner of the citizenry for police brutality, the police are back in the news again -- this time the men-in-uniform attached to the Cuncolim police.

A youth from Betul has alleged he was brutally assaulted by a group of five policemen at the Assolna police outpost on Sunday night with belts and fists without any rhyme or reason.

While Clint Rebello has demanded action against all the erring policemen, Velim Sarpanch Savio D’Silva has sought the intervention of the Director General of Police, Muktesh Chander, District police Chief, SP Arvind Gawas to probe into what he termed as “police brutality” and mete out justice to the young victim.

Clint told the media from the Hospicio bed on Monday morning that he was returning home after dropping his girlfriend. “There was an accident at Betul. When I had crossed a police jeep, there was a horn, requesting me to return back. I reversed my car to find out what had happened, but the policemen told me to proceed. Since I was called without any reason, I just casually mentioned “aauto mure” without referring to anyone”, he recalled.

Clint claimed at this juncture, a policeman with two stars slapped him on the face and dragged him out of the car by holding his collar and made him sit in the police jeep. “They took me to the Assolna police outpost where I was assaulted by five persons, including one person in civilian clothes, with belts and kicks. One of them punched me on my nose”, he added.

That’s not all. Clint claimed that he was taken to the Cuncolim police station later in the night and was threatened that he would be booked for assaulting the police, further threatening that they would stop me from joining the ship.

“What crime did I commit to warrant an assault with belts. This is not a way to assault someone without any rhyme or reason’, Clint said, while demanding action against the erring policemen.

Velim Sarpanch Savio D’Silva, who has taken up cudgels for young Clint hailing from the village, has demanding that the DGP, South Goa SP, intervene and order a probe into the incident and mete out justice for the victim. “Going by the injuries on Clint’s body, it is clear that he was beaten up brutally by the policemen. This is like beating an animal”, he said, while demanding justice for the youngster.
