MARGAO

Margao police detained a container truck containing boxes of fish after citizens raised an uproar at the Aquem Power House suspecting that the fish stored inside was laced with formalin.

The stinking container was later brought to the Margao police station to carry out an inquiry. Margao PI Kapil Nayak later Wednesday evening said the container would be released since it was heading to a fish meal plant at the Cuncolim Industrial Estate.

PI Kapil said he also spoke to FDA Director Jyoti Sardesai, who said that since the vehicle was heading to the fish meal plant, there’s no problem to release the vehicle.

The area surrounding the old bus stand, opposite the Margao police station, was enveloped in stink after some citizens opened the container door to

find out the nature of fish inside. While the citizens demanded a thorough inquiry into the matter from the formalin point of view, many others demanded to know how the container entered the State.

PI Kapil said that the vehicle had left the Betim jetty with fish and was heading to the fish meal plant at the Cuncolim Industrial Estate. “The delivery challan produced by the driver shows that the vehicle had left the Betim jetty with the fish for the fish meal plant. The delivery has been made by one Tausif Ahmed,” he said.

Replying to a question, PI Kapil said the police brought the container to the police station based on a complaint lodged by Alexander Araujo, a resident of Loutolim.
