Condemning the Congress party for the double speak on the demand to ban import of fish into the State, NCP Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao on Tuesday said only the people of Goa can decide whether they would not mind if fish is imported into the State without undergoing the highest quality checks laid down by the government.

“Congress leader Sankalp Amonkar and some tourism stakeholders have expressed their reservations on the ban imposed by the government on import of fish into the State. No one has the right to demand lifting of the ban. It is purely for the people of Goa to decide whether they want the fish traders to import fish without the safety checks,” Churchill told the media on Tuesday. He said that Congress President Girish Chodankar and other party leaders have been on record demanding a ban on import of fish after the formalin in fish row. “Now that the Health Minister Vishwajit Rane and TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai have banned imports, it is surprising to know that Congress leaders are now saying that a blanket ban is not required,” he said, while condemning them for their double speak. “Let the Congress come out and take a public stand on the ban imposed on outside fish,” he said.

Saying that the demand for ban on export of fish form Goa is not feasible, Churchill wondered what would happen to the fish such as tuna and other varieties such as Balle, which are not consumed by the local populace.

The Benaulim MLA further demanded that the wholesale fish market should come under the control of the local Goan fishermen. “This market is being controlled by migrants over the years after displacing local fishermen from the market. These wholesale fish traders may have been doing business at the wholesale fish market, but they are all migrants,” he added.
