MARGAO

The Margao Municipal Council resumed its crack down on erring businessman operating sans complying with tax guidelines, with the civic body sealing three establishments in the heart of the town on Friday evening.

Two shops dealing in footwear and another in gifts and greetings cards were sealed by a Municipal team headed by Chief Officer Siddivinayak Naik and Accounts and Administrative Officer Damodar Elekar.

Municipal officials informed that the three shops located behind a commercial complex near the Varde Valaulikar road had failed to produce the tax documents when insisted by the team on Friday.

The action initiated by the civic body drew a large crowd of anxious onlookers as the Municipal team did not pay heed to the protests raised by one of the owners. “When we insisted on certain tax documents, the owners were not in a position to produce. We had no option than to pull down the shutters. We have told the owners to produce the documents before the shops are unsealed,” an official said.

The MMC has enriched its coffers by Rs 2 crore by way of revenue on revision of house tax and rent on commercial establishments. The MMC has set a target to mop up revenue worth Rs 100 crore on this single head in the next one year.
