Authorities had with much fanfare beautified and illuminated the entire stretch of the NH17B between Dabolim Airport and Verna junction during the BRICS summit in Goa, but now have been found wanting in maintenance of these LED fixtures on the highway.

The situation is such that most of the street lights are non-functional and some are even hanging dangerously on a wire, posing serious threat to unsuspecting

motorists.

Several people had earlier complained to the National Highway Authorities of India (NHAI) regarding the non-functional street lights and now also raised serious concerns over a set of LED fixtures which are dangerously hanging on the electricity poles and swinging with the breeze.

Worried that the heavy metal enclosure could fall on motorists along the busy stretch at any time, locals said they had made several complaints have to NHAI, but nothing had been done in the matter.

Criticising the authorities, a resident, Satyavan Naik, said: “After the BRICS summit, no LED lights have functioned, and since then authorities have not bothered to look at the highway.”

“Since the last many days, we have seen these LED fixtures hanging and this is extremely dangerous. Who will be responsible if a heavy casing of an LED light falls on a motorist? Authorities are asleep and will wake up only after something serious happens,” said Naik.

Vasco-based social activist Kiran Naik said the lights along the NH17B have been ignored since the BRICS summit and about 62 lamp poles were also awarded to advertising agencies.

“The advertising boards are intact, but the LEDs above the posts are hanging dangerously,” said Naik.

When contacted, NHAI Project Director P S Dodamani has assured to immediately get the LED fixtures repaired and rectified.

“I have been made aware that one set of LED fixtures are hanging dangerously on a lamp post. I will immediately send my staff and we will immediately get it repaired and rectified,”

said Dodamani.
