Civil engineers fresh out of college and pondering over what to do next need look no further. With the Economic Development Corporation Limited (EDC), and Goa State Infrastructural Development Corporation Limited (GSIDC) signing an MoU on Monday, civil engineers now have the opportunity to bid for tenders for contracts to undertake renovation work of government schools and colleges.
If they win the bids, engineers, whether degree or diploma holders, will be given contracts of upto Rs 25 lakhs, informed EDC Chairman Sidharth Kuncalienkar. Any contracts that costs beyond Rs 25 lakhs will be awarded to regular contractors.
The MoU serves a dual purpose, providing self-employment opportunities to young engineers, and giving government schools and colleges a facelift.
“We want more students to enroll in government institutions, so once renovated, these institutions will be more spacious and airy. We also want our renovated buildings to last a minimum of 20 years,” Kuncalienkar informed.
“The institutions that are likely to get more feed if they are renovated, will be given first priority,” he explained, while also pointing out that after being renovated, Government College of Khandola has increased in student strength.
Meanwhile, Chairman of GSIDC Deepak Pauskar explained that the Rs 120 crore set aside for these renovations will make government schools up to date by the year 2022.
While Rs 60 crore has already been spent for works undertaken in 328 schools, Rs 120 crore has already been spent on colleges.
Interested candidates between the ages of 18 and 45 years can contact EDC. The current combined income of the applicant and spouse should be below Rs 10 lakhs per annum. Parents’ income will not be taken into consideration.
The MoU was signed by the MD of EDC, KV Ballikar and link officer of GSIDC Nikhil Desai, as the MD of GSIDC Srinet Khotwale was on leave.
The scheme is an extension of the Chief Minister’s Rojgar Yojna (CMRY) which aims to give employment to the youth.
