Stung by the scathing rap and a Rs 10,000 fine from the Bombay High Court earlier this week, the Goa Transport Department on Friday floated a tender for supply of digital fare meters for taxis.

State-owned Goa Electronics Limited advertised the tender inviting online Request for Proposal (RFP) for supply, installation and maintenance of ATD (automated tracking device) and an integrated emergency system and fare meters in taxis.

Two days ago, the Transport department had committed to the Bombay High Court that it would tender the supply of the digital meters for taxis by Friday. A division bench of the High Court, while acknowledging the tendering schedule, had however slammed the department for what it termed as “deliberate delay” or “lapse” in procuring the meters and compulsorily fitting them on licensed taxis in the state.

The High Court had also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the Transport department.

The writ petition filed by the Travel and Tourism Association of Goa among others seeking compulsory fitment of fare meters on taxis has been pending since 2016.

The HC had passed several interim orders since November 2017, including directions to ensure fare meters on taxis.
