A pregnant woman and a girl were injured after a portion of a slab collapsed at the KTC bus stand at Bicholim on Wednesday evening.
According to onlookers, the incident took place at about 5 pm as Rekhadevi (40), a native of Uttar Pradesh but residing at Mayem and the girl were waiting for a Mayem-bound bus at the KTC stand.
A portion of the slab came crashing down, causing serious injuries to the woman and minor injuries to the girl.
Onlookers rushed to their aid and shifted the two to the Bicholim Primary Health Centre. The woman was later moved to the Asilo hospital, Mapusa and then to GMC, while the girl was given first aid and discharged from Bicholim PHC.
On hearing about the incident, Bicholim MLA Rajesh Patnekar rushed to the site.    Later, speaking to reporters, he said, “I have spoken to KTC chairman and MD. They have promised to initiate the required steps. There is a proposal to demolish the old bus stand and build a new one at a cost of Rs 10 crore. The plan is ready and the stakeholders need to meet.”
Bicholim Mamlatdar Pravinvijay Pandit also visited the site and spoke to the KTC MD in the matter.  “I have convened a joint meeting with the MLA, KTC authorities and other officials concerned regarding the proposal for a new bus stand,” Pandit told reporters.
The Bicholim police cordoned off the damaged area of the bus stand and police inspector Sandesh Dalvi deputed a policeman at the site to caution people about the danger.
