The Progressive Muslim Front on Monday expressed confidence that the long pending demand of the Muslim community in Vasco to have a tarred road for the kabrastan in Maimolem would be fulfilled soon.

PMF President Niyazi Shaikh along with other committee members and Madina Masjid President Maksud Shaikh on Monday inspected the area after the road was finally levelled by laying rubble and stones and flattening

the area.

“For so many years now, the road leading to the kabrastan was not proper and there was only a mud road, causing the community a lot of hardship every time they had to visit the kabrastan for final rites,” Shaikh said.

Shaikh said the Muslim community had placed the demand for a tarred road before the administration for over three decades.

“The PMF and other Muslims had finally approached Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida who had assured them that he would take up the road works on a war-footing. Almeida also constantly followed up the matter with ward councillors and the contractor appointed for the road project, so that it is completed at the earliest. The Muslim community is grateful to Almeida and ward councillors, Fredrick Henriques and Yatin Kamurlekar, who finally made this long-pending demand a near reality,” Shaikh added.

Shaikh said Almeida had arranged for around 10 truckloads of rubble for the road leading to the kabrastan.

“The road was levelled on Saturday. Almeida has assured to tar the road in the next six months,”

Shaikh informed.
