In a development that has raised many a political eyebrow in Carmona and may trigger political stability, village Sarpanch Savita Mascarenhas has tendered her resignation to the office of the Director of Panchayats.
Savita’s decision to quit the post has come at a time when the effective strength of the Carmona panchayat body has come down to five members, following the resignation of panch member Benicio Carvalho and the death of another member Josinho Mendes.
At the Sunday gram sabha, only three panch members, including deputy Sarpanch Vialona Fernandes, Sandra Fernandes and Winston Dias were present, while Sarpanch Savita and panch member Allwyn George were conspicuous by their absence as they have proceeded on leave.
In her resignation letter, Savita has urged the Director of Panchayats to accept her resignation with immediate effect as her health does not permit her to continue her duties. In fact, the Sarpanch pointed out that in the letter that she has been on sick leave from June 16.
When The Goan contacted the sarpanch to shed light on her resignation, Savita confirmed that she had put in her papers last week on medical grounds. “The doctor has advised me to stay away from the public office due to my ill health. I have put in my papers on medical grounds,” she said.
When contacted, the Director of Panchayats Ajit Panchwadkar has confirmed that the Carmona sarpanch has tendered her resignation to his office some days ago.
Sources said the resignation of panch Benicio Carvalho from the membership of the panchayat and that the sarpanch has put in her papers may trigger instability in the 7-member panchayat body.
