MARGAO
Nerul Sports Club prevailed over Goa Velha Sports Club 3-1 via tie-breaker to cruise into the
semi-finals of the North Goa McDowell’s No 1 Yaari inter-village football tournament organized by Saligao United at Duler Ground, Mapusa on Wednesday. Both the teams were locked goalless at the end of normal period.
Both the teams started the game on sedate note as a result of which there were a few thrills at either end. As the match progressed, Nerul Sports Club were on the
attack only for their forwards to muff up gilt-edged scoring chances from ideal
postions.
At the other end, Goa Velha Sports Club did not lag behind as they launched a barrage of attacks but
their efforts were thwarted by the rival defenders.
Post resumption, Goa Velha Sports Club woke up from their first half slumber and put their foot on the gas. In the 39th minute, Nerul Sports Club missed a wonderful chance when striker Siddanath, with only Goa Velha Sports Club goalkeeper to beat, shot wide.
With time running out, Goa Velha Sports Club
nearly struck the match winner with striker Agnelo D’Silva balloning over his strike from a hand-shaking
distance. Defenders from both teams played in protecting their citadel to take the game into penalties.
In the ensuing tiebreaker, Aniket, Akash and Deepraj were on target for Nerul Sports Club while only Kunal converted for Goa Velha Sports Club.
